Capturing the AUS women’s basketball title for the first time in 61 years, the Axewomen basketball team will head to Calgary for the National Championship beginning on March 17. This past weekend the Axewomen ended the Cape Breton’s three year hold of the title with an 82-72 championship final win. Senior guard Emma Duinker, from Cambridge, NS, was named the Subway AUS Championship tournament most valuable and in her last season with the Axewomen posted 16.5 points per game average over the two game weekend. Duinker was also named as an AUS First Team All-Star this past week at the Championship Awards banquet.

The Axemen basketball team made their second consecutive appearance in the AUS Final championship game, but this time they walked away with the hardware as they defeated the CIS #6 ranked StFX X-men for their second title in the last five years. Leading the way, with a 22.5 points per game average and a weekend high 31 points against Saint Mary’s in the AUS semi-final game was third year guard Anthony Sears. The Riverview, NB native was named the Subway AUS Championship tournament MVP and was also honoured as an AUS Second Team All-Star at the tournament Awards Banquet.. |

The Axewomen basketball ended one of the most successful seasons in team history with a 17-3 record and an AUS championship bye to the semi-finals. This past weekend the Axewomen wrapped up their regular season and senior guard Emma Duinker, this week's Acadia - Jungle Jim's Female Athlete of the Week, capped her five year university basketball career as Acadia's Top Scoring - Career with 1328 points scored over five seasons. The Cambridge, NS native ranks 15th overall in the AUS career points standings. This past week Duinker averaged 14 points per game with a high of 19 points against Memorial on Saturday. In addition to her points scored this past week, Emma averaged 8.6 rebounds per game. Duinker finished fifth overall in AUS scoring with a 16.7 points per game average and fifth in rebounding with an average of 7.1 rebounds per game average. Emma was also second in three point field goals made with 51 in 20 games.

The Axemen basketball team clinched second place in the AUS standings with three wins this past week including Wednesday's game against Saint Mary's and two games at home against Memorial. First year guard Anthony Ashe is this week's co-winner of the Acadia - Jungle Jim's Male Athlete of the Week with a three game performance that averaged 15.3 points per game including a week high 23 points, nine rebounds and five steals against Memorial on Sunday afternoon. From Ottawa, ON and in his third year of eligibility after transfering from Carleton University, Ashe also added 6.6 rebounds per game to his effort with a week high of nine against Memorial. Anthony finished third in team scoring with a 12.7 points per game average and fifth overall in the AUS in three point field goal percentage and made three point field goals made with 46 in 20 games. |

This past weekend Acadia's Luc Boudreau and Justin Leblanc participated in the CIS National Swimming championship in Montreal. Boudreau, a second year breast stroke specialist from New Minas, NS was Acadia's top swimmer and is co-winner of this week's Acadia-Jungle Jim's Athlete of the Week. Boudreau, in day two of competition finished 12th in the 200m breast, set a new AUS and NS Senior Provincial record with a new personal best of 2:16:56, making him the fastest 200m breastroker in the history of Atlantic Canadian swimming. |

With a sweep of the UPEI Panthers this past weekend, the Axewomen basketball team improved to 15-2, clinching the first round bye in coming AUS Playoffs. Second year guard Kristy Moore is this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Female Athlete of the Week with her performance over the two game weekend against the Panthers. Moore, from Halifax, NS , averaged 25.5 points per game and netted a weekend high 28 points in her second game that included five of eight three point shots and six rebounds. Kristy is seventh in the AUS scoring race and fifth overall in three point shots made.

The Axemen hockey team extended the best of three quarterfinals series against UPEI with a 4-3 win at home in game two. Ste. Foy, QC native Jonathan Laberge is this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Male Athlete of the Week. Laberge played a role in tying the series at one with a two goal weekend performance. The senior centerman scored Acadia’s go ahead goal in the Axemen’s game one 4-3 loss to UPEI and scored Acadia’s third of four goals in the Axemen’s 4-3 win in game two.

The Axewomen volleyball team ended their season at home
against the StFX X-Women. Third year volleyball Axewoman Meg Rector is this
week’s Acadia-Jungle Jim’s Female Athlete of the week. Rector, a native of
Milton, ON and an outside hitter for Acadia, posted an impressive 0.417 hitting
percentage in Acadia’s 3-2 loss to the X-Women. Rector had 13 of the Axewomen’s
55 kills and finished fifth in AUS in hitting percentage 0.284 in 17 games.

The Acadia Axemen hockey team split the final weekend in the
AUHC regular season with a win against Dalhousie and a loss to Saint Mary’s,
completing the season in fifth place overall in the AUS. In his third
season with the Axemen, Andrew Clark is this week’s Acadia-Jungle Jim’s Co-Male Athlete of the Week for his one goal and
one assist performance against Dalhousie this past Friday. From Brandon, MB,
Clark captured the AUS regular season scoring crown with 15 goals and 24 assists
in 28 games. The last Axemen to win the scoring title was Kevin Baker during
the 2005-2006 season with 24 goals and 23 assists. Clark and the Axemen take on
the UPEI Panthers in the AUS Quarterfinals which begins in Charlottetown this
Friday night and returns to Acadia on Sunday at 7pm.

This past weekend the men’s swim
team finished second to perennial powerhouse Dalhousie at the AUS Swimming
championships this past weekend. Second year swimmer Luc Boudreau is this
week’s Acadia-Jungle Jim’s Co-Male Athlete of the Week with his gold medal
performance this past weekend in Halifax. Boudreau, a New Minas, NS native and
breast stroke specialist qualifies for the CIS National Championship hosted by
the University of Montreal with his weekend swimming results. Luc won gold in
100m & 200m Breast stroke; bronze as part of 4x100m Freestyle & Medley
Relays; fourth in 200m & 400m IM and 4x200m Freestyle Relay. Boudreau is
ranked eighth in the CIS breast stroke after all Canadian conferences completed
their regional championships.

Athletes of the Week - Jan. 30 - Feb. 5, 2012

Senior forward Emma Duinker was a key piece in the Axewomen basketball team’s extension of their winning streak to 12 by beating the first place Saint Mary’s Huskies this past Wednesday. The Cambridge, NS native had a game high 24 points versus the Huskies as the Axewomen moved into first place with a 12-1 record. Duinker also added nine rebounds and netted five three point shots in their 83-78 win. Emma currently sits in fifth place in the AUS scoring and rebounding with 16.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and leads the AUS with three point field goals made with 2.75 per game. This is the second week in a row that Emma is the Acadia-Jungle Jim’s Athlete of the Week.

For the second week in a row, Axemen basketball player Anthony Sears is the Acadia-Jungle Jim’s Athlete of the Week. The 6’ 4” third year guard from Riverview, NB had 22 points in their 76-75 edging of the Saint Mary’s Huskies last Wednesday night. Along with 22 points, Sears posted three timely three point shots. Anthony leads the Axemen with a 16.7 points per game average in scoring and is 9th in the AUS scoring race. Anthony is first in AUS free throw percentage with 33 of 37 free throw shots sunk. |

Cambridge, NS native Emma Duinker is this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s
Athlete of the Week after the Acadia Axewomen basketball team's 92-67
win over the Dalhousie Tigers this past Friday Night extended their
winning streak to ten. An AUS All-Star last season, the 6’ senior guard
shot the lights out in the first half of the match-up against the
Tigers, netting three 3pt shots in the first five minutes of the first
quarter. Duinker scored a game high 28 points of which 20 points were in
the first half and was 11 for 19 from the floor and four for seven from
the three point line. She also posted a team high nine rebounds. Emma
is currently second in team scoring with a 15.6 points per game average
and sixth overall in the AUS conference scoring race. Duinker sits
second in the AUS in three point shots made with 28 in 11 games.

The Axemen basketball team improve their record to 7-4 with a 99-90 win over the Dalhousie Tigers and slip into second place, trailing UPEI by four points. In their win over the Tigers, third year guard Anthony Sears added a game high 29 points to the Axemen’s offensive output. The 6’4” guard from Riverview, NB was 11 for 12 from the free throw line and had eight of the team’s 20 defensive rebounds. Anthony leads the Axemen in scoring with a 16.4 points per game average and is ninth in the conference scoring race. He is top in the conference with a free throw percentage of 0.882 (30 of 34 attempts) and is fourth in the AUS in 3pt shots made with 24 in 10 games.

The CIS #8 ranked Axewomen basketball team swept two games at Memorial this weekend, pushing Acadia into first place in the AUS standings. Third year forward Abbey Duinker is this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's Athlete of the Week after a 42 point weekend against the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Newfoundland. Duinker, from Cambridge, NS, had a weekend high 26 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in Acadia's second win against the Sea-Hawks. In the Axewomen's first game on Saturday, Abbey had a 16 points and 9 rebounds along with 2 blocks. Duinker is third in AUS rebounding with 8.4 rebounds per game average and leads the AUS in blocked shots with 19 in 10 games. Abbey was named this week's AUS Subway Athlete of the Week.

This past weekend the Acadia swim team completed the regular season with the AUS Invitational hosted by UPEI. New Minas native Luc Boudreau captures this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's Athlete of the Week honours with his outstanding individual performance in the UPEI pool. Boudrea, a breast stroke specialist, won the 50m, 100m and 200m breast stroke events along with a second place finish in 200m and 400m Individual Medley.

The Axemen basketball split their week’s schedule with a close loss to the Saint Mary’s Huskies and an important four point win against UNB. Third year forward Owen Klassen’s play stood out for the Axemen and is this week’s Acadia - Jungle Jim’s Athlete of the Week. From Kingston, ON, Klassen averaged 15 points per game and had a weekend high eight for nine from the floor for 17 points against the UNB Varsity Reds. Klassen posted 13 points and 9 rebounds in Acadia’s loss the Huskies. Owen leads the AUS in rebounding with a 10.4 rebounds per game average and also leads the conference in blocked shots of 14 in eight games.

Second year guard Kristy Moore averaged 16 points this past weekend and is this week’s Acadia - Jungle Jim’s Athlete of the Week. The native of Halifax, NS had a weekend high 17 points against the UNB Varsity Reds that included 13 rebounds – 11 defensive; four assists and three steals. Against the first place Huskies, Moore netted 15 points and was four for five from the charity line. Moore leads the Axewomen scoring race with a 16.0 points per game average, good enough for seventh in the AUS.

Athletes of the Week - January 2 - 8, 2012

The Axemen basketball team returned to action following the
Christmas Holiday break this past Thursday night hosting the Cape Breton Capers
where both teams had not played against each other since last year’s shocking
Acadia victory over the #1 seeded Capers in the AUS Championship semi-final.
Anthony Sears, a junior guard from Riverview, NB, led the Axemen to a 108-65
win over the Capers, scoring a game high 35 points - second highest in the AUS
this season. Sears was 14 for 15 from the floor – highest field goal percentage
in the AUS this season; five for five from the three point line and posted a
team high 8 rebounds. Anthony was also named the AUS Subway Male Athlete of the Week.

The Hockey Axemen wrapped their first weekend back following two exhibition games over the Christmas Holidays with wins against the CIS #6 ranked Moncton Aigles Bleus and St. Thomas. Against the Aigles Bleus, fourth year centre Jonathan Laberge netted two goals and added an assist in Acadia's 5-2 win over Moncton. The Ste-foy, QC native had his third goal of the weekend against St. Thomas. |

The CIS #8 ranked Axewomen basketball team opened the new
year with a 94-83 win over the ever-strong Cape Breton Capers this past
Thursday. Senior forward Emma Duinker led the Acadia in scoring with 23 points
against the Capers. The Cambridge, NS native was four for seven from the three
point, netting timely three point shots including a shot from the distant arc
at the seven minute mark of the third quarter that gave Acadia a lead that
would not be lost for the remainder of the game. Emma also captured nine rebounds
and had three blocks in the win. |

The Axewomen basketball team won two of three games at the UQAM Holiday Classic Basketball tournament in Montreal. For the second time this season, third year guard Stef Chapman is the Acadia female athlete of the week for her performance over the three day tournament. The native of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS had 40 points in three games that included Ottawa, Laurier and McMaster as opponents. Chapman had a game high of 17 points and four steals against Laurier. |

The Hockey Axemen wrapped up their second pre-season game of the Holiday season with a 4-0 win against the StFX X-Men hosted by Berwick’s Kings Mutual Centre. First year Axemen forward Alex Beaton, from Sackville, NS netted three of Acadia's four goals in the Axemen’s victory over the X-Men. |

Axemen hockey’s Chris Owens is this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Male Athlete of the Week. The St. John’s, NL defenseman was instrumental in Acadia’s 4-3 overtime win against the StFX X-men this past weekend. Owens, who has logged a lot of ice time with recent injuries to several defensemen, had a two goal performance against the X-Men, including the eventual overtime winning goal. The sophomore currently leads the AUS defensemen with 20 points that includes 9 goals and 11 assists. Chris is tied for third place overall in the AUS scoring race. |

This past weekend the Axewomen volleyball team knocked off the CIS #8 ranked Dalhousie Tigers and Cole Harbour, NS native Pam Giordani was key the Acadia’s three straight set win over the Tigers. The fourth year libero had 17 digs in each match this past weekend including a loss to the CIS #3 ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies. Pam is currently second in the AUS in digs per game with 3.92 digs per set.

The Axemen basketball team lost a heartbreaking 90-89 overtime game to the CIS #2 ranked StFX X-men and junior forward Owen Klassen was named Acadia's player of the game for his effort. The 6'10" forward from Kingston, ON posted a double double including 26 points and 19 rebounds in Acadia's loss to StFX. Klassen added 18 points and 6 rebounds in Acadia's convincing 80-54 win over UNB. Klassen currently leads the AUS conference in rebounding with a 10.3 rebounds per game average and is the Axemen's leading score with a 19.3 points per game average. |

The Axewomen basketball won both games this past weekend to improve to 2-1 after the first week and half of the regular season. Fourth year Axewomen Stef Chapman is this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's Female Athlete of the Week with her weekend performance that included 45 points in two games. The St. Margaret's Bay, NS native posted a weekend high 26 points against StFX and was 9 for 13 from the floor. In Acadia's second game, Chapman netted 19 points and had two steals to lead the Axewomen to a 88-72 win over UNB. Chapman leads the Axewomen in scoring so far this season with a 19.0 points per game average and has a field goal percentage of 0.531. She leads the AUS in three point percertage of 0.571.

This past weekend’s win in football as the Axemen took AUS championship honours highlight’s this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Male Athlete of the Week. Barrie, ON native Kyle Graves led the Axemen to a 39-20 win over the reigning champion Saint Mary’s Huskies. Graves, a fourth year quarterback for the Axemen rushed for three touchdowns and completed 12 of 16 passes for 170 yards. Graves was awarded the Don Loney Trophy as the game’s Most Valuable Player. Earlier in the week, Graves was named as a AUS All-Star and is the conference’s Hec Crighton nominee for the Most Valuable Player in the Country. |

Acadia swimmer Luc Boudreau is this week's Male Acadia Jungle Jim's Athlete of the week. The New Minas, NS native anchored the men's team second place finish in the team standings at the annual Jack Scholz Swim Meet hosted by Acadia this past weekend. The second year breaststroke specialist highlighted the men's performance with a first place win in the 200m breaststroke and also added a first place win in the 400 individual medley. As the top scoring Axemen, Boudrea also added a third place finish in the 200m individual medley and fifth place finishes in the 400m and 1500m freestyle. The weekend performance ranks Boudreau as the Nation's top 200 breaststroke swimmers thus far this season and his weekend swim in the 200m qualified him for the CIS National Championship in February. |

Second year swimmer Eliza McGuire topped the Axewomen performance with a second place 100m Fly, third place in 200m and 400m individual medley; fourth place swim in the 100m breaststroke and fifth place finish in 200m breaststroke. From Nanaimo, BC, McGuire was the hightest finishing swimmer for the team, as the Axewomen completed the Jack Scholz Swim Meet in third place overall in point total. |

This past weekend the women’s Cross Country team completed the season at the AUS championship with a fourth place team finish. Third year runner Christine Manning, from Canning, NS is this Week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Female Athlete of the Week for her 21st place finish with a time of 21:11:09 for the 5 km cross country run. It was her best finish of the season and was the top finisher for the Axewomen Cross Country Team at the championship meet held at UNB.

The Axemen soccer team completed their season with a 2-0 win against Dalhousie this past Sunday. Team captain Jonathan Hammond is this week’s Acadia Jungle Jim’s Male Athlete of the Week for his three goal performance this past weekend. Hammond, a native of Halifax, NS and in his fourth season with the Axemen had one goal in Acadia’s 2-1 loss to UPEI and scored both goals in Acadia’s 2-0 win over Dalhousie this past Sunday. |

The Acadia Axemen football team clinched home field advantage and a bye to the AUS Subway Loney Bowl Championship this past weekend with a 41-28 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies. The Axemen victory was led by senior Mike Squires who is this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's Athlete of the Week. The fourth year, 6'4" 215 lbs. receiver scored 24 of the Axemen's 41 points on four touchdown receptions. From Halifax, NS, Squires accumulated 116 yards on eight receptions including his longest of 49 yards on his first catch and touchdown of the game.Squires was named the CIS and AUS Offensive Player of the Week along with his teammate Jake Thomas, named the CIS and AUS Defensive Player of the Week.

The Axewomen rugby team will advance to the AUS Subway Rugby Championship game against StFX this Friday night at 6pm as they defeated the UPEI Panthers this past Saturday afternoon 22-7 in the Island. First year Janna Slevinsky is this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's female Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row. The a rookie 8-man, from St. Albert, AB played a great game defensively, showing once again confidence beyond her ‘first year’ position by running well with the ball, while scoring one of three team trys against the Panthers. |

The Axemen hockey team opened the regular season with two convincing wins, the first against Moncton (9-2) followed by a 3-1 victory over St. Thomas. Last year's AUS All-Rookie team defenseman, Chris Owens, netted two goals, one in each game this past weekend. The St. John's native who is one of the team's best puck movers, played extremely well anchoring the powerplay as well as penalty kill for the Axemen As a second year Axeman, Owens showed great composure all weekend long. |

The Axemen football team took a step forward in hopes to host a AUS championship game in mid-November with a convincing 40-10 win over the Mount Allison Mounties. From Edmonton, AB, and a second year running back, Zack Skibin is this week’s co-winner of the male Athlete of the week with his best performance of his career at Acadia accumulating 170 nets yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. Zack averaged 8.1 yards per carry, with his longest of the day of 33 yards. |

The Axewomen rugby team fell three points short in a 19-14 win over UPEI losing their opportunity to host the AUS semi-finals. Acadia's Janna Slevinsky, a rookie 8-man, from St. Albert, AB showed great poise in a tough game against the UPEI Panthers this past weekend. Slevinski had an excellent game defensively and exhibited confidence beyond her ‘first year’ position by running well with the ball and supporting her team-mates offensively.

Acadia defensive back Cameron Wade is this week's Acadia Jungle Jim's Athlete of the Week following the football team's 29-14 win over Mount Allison. Wade, a third-year defensive back from Moncton, N.B., picked up his first interception of the season and the fourth of his career this past weekend in a 29-14 road win over the Mount Allison Mounties. Cameron intercepted Mounties quarterback Jake Hotchkiss early in the second quarter and returned it 40 yards before being tackled at the Mounties 20-yard line. Wade, a 2010 AUS all-star defensive back, also recorded 2.5 tackles (1.5 tackles for a loss) and was credited with a half sack in the victory. |

Second year Cross Country athlete Caroline Evans is this week's Junlge Jim's Female Athlete of the Week. For the third AUS meet this season, Caroline led the Axewomen in final results, placing 17th overall with a time of 21:38:00. From Sackville, NB, Evans' 17th place is her best performance in the standings this season. Her performance combined with her teammates placed Acadia in 2nd place overall in the Meet final team standings.

The Axewomen rugby team is back on track with their second win in a row with convincing 34-5 win over Saint Mary's. Third year scrum-half Amber Davidson is this week's Jungle Jim's Female Athlete of the Week with her two try performance against the Huskies. Davidson, a native of Kingston, NS, scored Acadia's first of six trys at the 27 minutes into the first half and then scored her second of the day with ten minutes remaining in the game. |

The Acadia Axemen soccer team picked up a tie this past weekend against Memorial without team captain Jonothan Hammond. Fourth year defender Cameron McGill is this week's Jungle Jim's Male Athlete of the Week for stepping up his play while assigned the task as temporary team captain. From Wolfville, NS, McGill played strong defense keeping the Sea-Hawks at by for the most part of the day until the tying goal within minutes of the completion of the match. |

With a 3-0 record thus far, the football Axemen can attribute part of their great start to the season to the defense led by Axeman Jake Thomas. A native of Douglas, NB, the fourth year defensive tackle currently leads his team and the AUS in quarterback sacks, averaging 1.5 sacks per game with a total of three solo and 3 assisted sacks in three games. This past weekend in Acadia's win over StFX, Thomas added two quarterback sacks and 3.5 forced tackles for a loss to his season tally. |

The Acadia Axewomen rugby team got back on track with their first win of the season at the hands of Saint Marys in a 24-10 victory. First year centre Deidre Rees, from St. John's, NL, scored two trys against the Huskies this past weekend, allowing for the win and placing her second in the AUS women's rugby conference with three trys in three games. |
